Can mineral deposits look like white scratches on a glass aquarium?

I started a 30 gallon freshwater planted aquarium about 4 months ago and recently upgraded to a new brighter light fixture. I’ve just recently noticed that there were hundreds of what look like scratches all across the tank front and back. I talked to my local pet store and they said that it could be mineral deposits. Can mineral deposits look like white scratches on the tank? They said that aquarium glass is strong and should not have hundreds of scratches unless someone took sand paper to the glass or something really abrasive. If they are mineral deposits than what is the best way to remove them. I heard use vinegar and a scraper blade made especially for aquariums. Please help…

Yes, they can. I lived in Indiana for a long time with rock hard water (the water was all limestone-enclosed groundwater) and I’ve ended up with white calcium deposits in all sorts of places on my aquarium. When I moved to an area with softer water, my tanks were already empty so I did a 10-20% vinegar soak on all of them. It helped, but some of the crusts are still there. Clearly, do not do this if you want to keep your tank stable and going (and obviously nothing living should be in there at the time).

Your aquarium glass is strong and shouldn’t scratch, but it certainly can. I’m not sure what could be the cause of it.
