Why does my air compressor not hold air for very long? And why does it lose pressure so fast?

i have a no-name, 5hp, 30gal air compressor that i bought from Kragen. It has never worked as well as a tank that size should. I let it run until it shuts off (once the tank is full), and after that, I have only a really strong supply of air for maybe 5 full minutes before i begin to lose serious pressure. And with no real pressure behind them, my air tools are too weak to do anything worthwhile. I cannot even remove the nuts off of my tires! Oil level is fine, the hose has no leaks that i can see, and the tools are properly maintained and oiled everyday. What am i doing wrong? Is it because I should have done things the right way and bought a Craftsman? …..thanks 4 any help.

Look at the air gauge. Is it around 120psi when it shuts off? Does the pressure go down when you’re not using tools? Does the compressor take longer than 5 minutes to fill the tank?

If you lose pressure when you’re not doing anything, bring a small female in and ask her to find the leak. Girls can hear bats and will be able to track down leaking air a lot faster than your old rock music deafened ears could.
If it takes more than 5 or 6 minutes to fill the tank when you turn it on, the compressor is probably worn.
If you never get 120psi, you might have the regulator adjusted wrong.
If you have 120PSI, but the tools are still gutless, you have a restriction in the airline somewhere.
