Wakeboarding, from afar, could be mistaken as water skiing by those who are not that familiar with surface water sports. It could not be helped since wake boarding was developed from water skiing, snow boarding, and surfing.
Like water skiing, the rider or wakeboarder, is towed behind a speed boat. Two differences are that the wakeboarder is standing sideways on a skateboard or snow board and the rope is attached higher, around seven feet or two meters, above the water level, to a pole or tower on the boat. The added height allows the wakeboarder to have the air and hang time to execute more tricks. This could be the major contributor to the continuing popularity of wakeboarding.
Wakeboarders, like other sports enthusiasts, also like tinkering with their speed boats for better function and appearance. One part that had really evolved is the boat tower. From a pole where the rope is attached, it has now become multifunctional, and consequently, many varieties of designs are available.
Being the more visible part of the boat, the boat tower naturally was assigned other uses to enhance the wakeboard boat’s appearance or style. Depending on the design, the boat tower also holds the rack where the wakeboard is stored, the speaker system, the lighting, and other accessories.
What is the best boat tower? Actually, the best kind is what fits the boat owner’s expectation. A prospective wakeboard boat tower buyer must consider the following:
FUNCTION
What do you intend to use the tower for aside from its basic function? Will it store your wakeboard in a rack attached to it? Do you plan to attach your speaker system and lighter to the tower? If you do, look for a boat tower designed to hold all the accessories yet maintain the necessary rigidity or stability for the rope attached to it.
MATERIAL
To support the intended function, the boat tower should be made of the right material. The buyer should make sure the material will not be corroded by sea water. Most boat towers offered by manufacturers are made of stainless steel or aluminum.
FIT and STYLE
Here the buyer should take into consideration the specifications of the boat, particularly the dimension, where the boat tower shall be installed in. Boat towers come in different colors and shapes to suit the buyer’s individual taste. Does the tower enhance the boat’s appearance?
INSTALLATION and SAFEKEEPING
Is the tower easy to install, dismantle and fold by yourself? These are very important considerations since in the beaches, you can’t expect mechanics to assist you. The tower should also fold down to a size that could be conveniently stored.
UNIVERSAL or CUSTOM BUILT?
Both has its advantages and disadvantages. The most important consideration would be fit and function. Would the tower fit the boat well that its function does not deteriorate after a short time?
Another consideration is time. The universal or one size fits all model would solve an immediate need.
