Pond Tip: Energy Saving pumps
There are literally thousands of different types of pumps out there, each one designed to move water from the pond bottom, through the filtration, then back up to the pond again. Most pumps that pond service companies run into that are above-the-ground style are either swimming pool or spa pumps that a builder has put on the pond.
After all, a builder figures that a swimming pool supply house carries pumps so he picks one up, installs it, and sure enough the pump does the job of pumping the water. The problem with this style of pump is, even though it will run for twenty four hours per day, these pumps are not designed to do that in an energy-efficient manner. A swimming pool or spa only needs to turn its own body of water over twice per day for effective filtering. That’s why a pool or spa pump is not always running.
Several hours per day is sufficient to filter the water. It doesn’t matter what the amp draw is when operating since it is not for a long period of time. A pond, however, needs to be running twenty four hours a day in order to properly filter and oxygenate the pond.
Ponds that run on pool pumps are costing the homeowner hundreds of dollars per month to operate. Changing the pump out to a low speed unit will pay for itself in a matter of months. The secret behind a low speed pump is simply that. It is running on half the speed of a swimming pool pump, but because of the housing and impeller design, It can easily move as much if not more water than a high speed pool unit.
As a pond owner, you can do yourself a favor and change out that old, outdated energy sucking monster and start saving money right away! It’s a convenient and affordable way to be environmentally smart.
