Can I use a differant battery in my drill?

I own a 12 volt Ni Cad dewalt drill, both battery’s need replacing. Can I use the lithium battery in place of the Ni Cad and go up in volts

You can never increase the voltage of the battery for a particular drill and very few will allow you to switch from one type to another. Sometimes you can use a lesser voltage battery, but never one that is higher. I had a 12V DeWalt drill that I could use 9.6V batteries in, but they were both NiCad and obviously didn’t last as long. In almost all cases, the battery simply won’t fit in a tool that cannot accept it.

In almost all cases, if your batteries are old and not taking a charge, it is much more economical to properly recycle them and buy a kit with a new drill, batteries, and charger. Anything more than a few years old will simply begin to fail and because Cadmium is a heavy metal and can pollute ground water it is best to take them somewhere that can dispose of them safely and buy a new kit. Lithium Ion and Nickel Metal Hydride batteries can be thrown in a landfill, but I’d still take them to a recycling center as they can be refurbished with new cells.

Look into reconditioned tools at reconditionedsales.com or cpotools.com as you can get a factory refurbished kit for less than you would probably pay for a pair of batteries at a home center or hardware store. It kind of stinks that no matter how much you actually use a cordless tool, the batteries will stop accepting a charge after a few years, but it’s a lot smarter to recycle them and buy a new or reconditioned kit in most cases.
