Will you please help with a problem with my Briggs and Stratton 5hp engine?

Hello!! I have a 5hp Briggs and Stratton 5hp horizontal engine on my go kart. It starts fine but moments after I start using the go kart the recoil cord gets caught inside the engine and makes a very loud noice till I stop the engine and pull the cord slack out of the engine. How do I stop this? Should I replace the recoil or the cord?

Cord may be too long and gets caught up. Pull it out to start but dont release it. Slowly return the cord unitl it begins to get caught up. Cut the cord and retie to the handle.
