How many centimeters are in an inch (dont say 2.54 without reading)?
My calculator has a converter on it. I put in “1″ in inches and convert to centimeters, and it returns the value “2.5400051″. Its the first time Ive ever seen this conversion ratio. I checked online and every site quotes “2.54″ as the EXACT value. But is that the case? We are talking Metric to English-standard conversions, after all… nothing Ive ever seen between any two units has ever been such a perfect and convenient ratio. Its inconceivable to me that the proper, exact ratio is a terminating rational number of so few digits. I am inclined to trust this foreign made calculator over American hosted websites and whatnot. I dont care how accurate 2.54 is, is it exact or not? What is the exact conversion ratio, regardless how complex?
Someone (a moron, I suppose) defined an “international inch” to be 2.54 cm.

Rather strange, people who bang on about how an inch and an “international inch” are too close to bother about the difference, but won’t tell you the conversion factor. If they are too close to bother about the difference, why define an “international inch” in the first place ?

“Late in the 19th century the United States stopped basing its yard on British prototypes, and defined it instead as a fraction of the meter. (See history of the yard in the United States.) Thereafter the lengths of the British and U. S. yard, (and hence the foot, inch and every other linear unit) were slightly different.
At first this difference was too small to be significant, but as machine work became more precise the difference between the British and U. S. inch became a problem. During the Second World War, for example, aircraft mechanics discovered that some parts of aircraft engines built to identical blueprints in the United States and England differed enough in size to be noninterchangeable.

Then it was found to be not fit for purpose because it naturally differed from the British yard.
Then an “international” yard was defined circa 1959.
We’re supposed to believe that defining an “international” yard will fix things.
