Is convection heat really “warmer” than other heat?
Someone once told me that there is a difference between the quality of the kind of heat you get from a hot air heater and the radiation heat you get from, say, a cast-iron stove – and the latter being the superior one. Is this actually true? Are there two kinds of “warm”, no matter what the thermometer says?
It depends on what you want to do. Convection has the benefit of heating the air then forcing it through a volume in such a fashion that the air is mixed and a relatively uniform temperature is achieved throughout the volume. In cooking it brings hot air near the food to replace cooler are that has sunk its heat into the colder food.
Radiant heat is limited by the inverse square law, meaing that the farther you are from the source, the lower the intensity, and the less warmth you receive. Radiant heat tend to produce hot spots centered in the source which is exceedingly hot that falls off to a region that is often cold and also uncomfortable. On top of this, the radiation means one side of a person will be exposed and constantly warmed, and the other side of a person will be unexposed and cold, producing a temperature variation that is uncomfortable to some people that leads to figgeting to equalize the tempurature… but that effect can also produce a more cozy feeling too.
Also, I think the wavelength of the thermal energy of a cast iron stove is not absorbed by the air, meaning the air does not get hot but is, in turn, warmed by the re-radiation of heat from other objects.
There are other practical considerations, such as comfort, humidity, dust, noise, economy (production and transport of heat) and so on. Some forms of radiant heating are more economical now, such as hot water piping under a wood or tile floor (especially if the water is warmed by solar thermal panels). Forced air ducting can harbor dust, mites and insects, molds and other irritants. Either system can be safe or dangerous with regard to combustion products, such as CO and CO2 if faulty in operation.
Personally, I prefer radiant heat. I think it is quieter, more economical, better for air quality, doesn’t drive down humidity in a room/house and warms up a place faster.
