Ceramic Grinding Stone
What material is good for a mortar and Pestle?
My current one is a little ceramic aromatherapy mortar and pestle and it’s just not working for me; I need somethign I can really pound into and put my shoulder behind it. Since I macerate herbs into oils to mix them I can’t use wooden ones or other materials that would easily absorb that stuff. I also need a material that can grind or at least really soften up resins and dried roots without giving way to them. Y’know, like frankincense, myrrh, copal, High John root, willow bark, elm bark, etc.
What’s a good, durable material for a mortar and pestle for this kind of thing? I’ve seen Brass, but I kinda wanna avoid metals, so I’m mainly trying to figure out between marble, soapstone, coral, etc. since I haven’t personally worked with any of them for a long period. My friend has a marble one that I actually ground some storebought incense into the stone with (grinding resin-like beads of incense into a fine powder will often do that I hear).
So, yeah, any suggestions?
Glazed porcelain, agate or marble would be the best choices because they are durable and non-porous.
