Where can I buy an Electric a/c compressor?

I have a 67′ VW Type 3 Fastback. I want to put a/c but I don’t want to put a belt driven a/c compressor. The a/c kits are priced pretty well but they all come with a belt driven a/c compressor.

First you said “No, I do not want another motor of any kind”. All electric compressors have a motor in them, it is just that you usually can’t see it.

The electric scroll A/C compressor you found is used in the NHW20 (2004-2009) Prius. It is a permanent magnet rotor motor design (not induction) powered by 3 phase AC generated by the Prius inverter. The board that does the inverting also has the 100A DC-DC converter that supplies the 12V bus off of the HV bus and is protected by a 30 amp fuse. Per the math the DC-DC only uses about 7 amps out of the 30 (14×100=1400 watts 1400/201.6=6.9 amps) following the 80% safe loading rule it is actually 7 out of 24 which leaves 17 amps for the A/C compressor. 17×201.6=3427 watts. 3427/14.4=238 amps. Once again applying the 80% rule you would need at least a 300 amp alternator to power it, and that is assuming you can build a custom inverter to drive it.

Just go the belt driven route, trust us. 3427 watts means it is about a 3 ton capacity A/C (enough for a house) and is 4.6 horsepower. Alternators are only about 50% efficient so you can double that figure.
