Digital Inspection Camera
My dog has pimples on her stomach. After closer inspection, I found a small red mite on each pimple.?
I would like to know what genus this mite belongs to. Google images has not helped me with this. The mite is smaller than half a millimeter and is always red. I think that it ‘mite’ be Cheyletiella but the pictures on Google images don’t match up. My vet told me that the dog is allergic to something–which I know is wrong because the red mites aren’t present on the pimple-free areas of her body.
Oh, I live in Southern Oregon if that helps narrow things down. I also took a picture of it with my digital camera and enlarged it to show that it is egg-shaped with many legs. Yahoo answers does not give me an option to post this photo.

Trombicolosis
In temperate regions, trombicolosis is seasonal occurring in late summer and fall while in warmer climates it occurs throughout the year. In America, Neotrombicula autumnalis causes the infestation while in Europe Eutrombicula alfreddugesi is the cause. These mites are usually free living but have a parasitic larval stage. The condition mainly affects animals that scavenge in areas where the adult mites reside.
The larval mites latch on to the animal feed for a few days then fall of when they are engorged. While attached the mites cause a number of different signs including reddening, crusting, hair loss and pruritis. The mites appear as small red or sometime orange dots on the skin of the animal. The sensitivity of the dog to the mite accounts for a range of signs with some dog showing no indication of infestation and others have severe pruritis.
Keeping the dog from scavenging during the time the larval mites are active prevent the infestation. Amitraz are Fipronil options for treatment and prevention.
