Why won’t my car start?
97 Nissan 200SX suddenly stopped starting. In the morning it drove fine, a couple hours later, the engine makes that whirr-whirr sound, but won’t turn over. Battery seems fine, lights and radio come on. Spark plugs are fine, wires and distributor cap seem fine, fuses all check out. Ignition switch and starter have been replaced in the last two years. Has a quarter tank of gas and topped off fluids. For diagnostic criteria I have a set of wrenches and a light-bulb style live wire tester, and not much else.
It’s definitely not a frozen anything. It’s 77 here in Orlando
To clarify, it’s not the weak little click like when the battery’s dead. It’s trying to turn over and failing. I don’t have anyone to help me listen for the solenoid right now, but I checked the timing belt. It’s intact, but I can’t get to it to confirm it’s in good shape.
I tried jumping it with a jump box. I figured if it was the alternator I’d at least get some change, but no luck
Locate the starter solenoid and have somebody try to crank your car over a couple of times. If it is working correctly, you should feel and maybe hear the plunger inside the solenoid. It should be fairly noticeable, almost forceful, if not, chances are you just found your problem. Good idea to remove it and take it with you to verify you get the correct replacement. Don’t forget to pull the battery cables first!
