Entry Level Jobs in the Oil Fields

Roustabouts are one place to start in the offshore oil entry level job; these are the kind of jobs that require a person to be in top shape. Roustabouts handle the heavy pipes and other drilling equipment that are needed on an offshore oil rig. The work also may require offloading the supplies from boats, upkeep of the oil rig which includes scraping and painting the rig, unskilled labor. Other duties include changing the drill bits, cleaning and replacing drill pipe as needed.

An entry level worker needs to be able to work as a team as the shift work will usually require 12 hours on and 12 off for two or three weeks at a time. It is important to be able to get along with other workers on the rig. The roustabouts have to take classes in survival and fire fighting among others before working on a rig; these are usually held onshore and include information about the rig itself as well as the equipment on it.

Work is often performed on heights, in dirty and wet conditions or stormy weather. The work is ongoing all of the time in order to pull the oil from beneath the ocean floor. The work is not for everyone but for those people who are attracted to tough challenging work, it is the beginning of a career that can span decades as the job changes and positions become available on the offshore rigs. Travel to and from the rigs is usually by helicopter.

In addition to the physical requirements it is a good idea for an entry level worker to have good hand/ eye coordination; practical knowledge of how to use hand tools; be ready to live away from home for extended periods of time; be aware of the safety of himself and the crew at all times; be on time for meeting the aircraft when scheduled.

Skills gained while working in the armed forces or shipyards will be helpful. Most people who start as roustabouts are in their late teens or early twenties and enjoy outdoor type of work. The roustabout or roughnecks who demonstrate a high work ethic; learn about the rig operation and follow instructions are often those chosen to move up into other jobs that require more responsibility and knowledge.

The work salary varies between $ 35,000 to $40,000 per year including benefits for entry level jobs on offshore oil rigs and platforms. This may vary according the location of the rigs and the dangers involved in the work itself. Like other jobs that require physical toughness, the roustabout or roughneck is demanding both physically and mentally but very rewarding if you stick with it.
