Start / turn / crank engine manually without starter?

Pulled an engine from a junk car sitting in my back yard. I am junking the shell, but I want to see if the engine starts up and sounds good. However, the starter motor was bolted into the transmission bellhousing and turned the teeth of the torque converter to start the car. Bad news is, I no longer have the torque converter, so I am looking for a way to crank the engine enough to start it without a starter. I can stick a breaker bar in the 1/2″ drive slot on the crankshaft and turn it pretty easily because of the leverage, but no where near fast enough to turn it. I was thinking of maybe using an air gun hooked up to my air compressor, but since there is no leverage, I doubt there would be enough torque to turn it over. Has anyone else dealt with this problem or knows a way to start the engine without having to buy another torque converter? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Your engine should be on an engine stand. A fuel supply and enough electrical equipment is needed to give it spark. It needs a radiator and coolant plumbing. If you crank it with an air tool, make sure it either ratchets or you jerk it off before the tool gets snatched away from you and slung off somewhere. A school which teaches autoshop will have all the stuff you need.
