I have a clanging sound when I drive over 60 mph. Exhaust pipe or drive shaft?
Volvo S60-
My wife drove over a rock and dented the exhaust pipe, protective bracket, and scratched the drive shaft. I took it to a repair shop and he unbent the bracket and pipe- he said that the scratches on the drive shaft would not affect performance.
The car seemed fine when I picked it up. However, as soon as I reached 50-60 mph on the highway, it started to make a clanging sound like hitting a pot with a spoon. The sound persists as long as I am going above 50 mph even when coasting.
I think something is loose, though it may be a bigger problem. Is it just a loose bracket or something more serious?
It is AWD.
No vibrations or thumping- just the clanging noise.
I like independent muffler shops. They can put it on a hoist and inspect that part of the system in minutes.
Is it front or rear wheel drive? Either way that doesn’t sound like a drive shaft problem.
If you want to attempt your own repair, start with a spool of stainless steel wire from a local hardware store.
Loop the wire around the exhaust pipe or a hanger strap, then around any available place on the frame or under panel.
Snug it up with a few twists.
That should stop the pipe/muffler/catalytic converter from swaying at high speed.
