Do I need to sand old paint from furniture before re-painting?
I bought a small table and two chairs for my daughter. They are solid wood, and the lady who sold them to me had already primed them and started to paint them a lavender color. There isn’t any finish on top of the paint. I’ve been trying to sand it off (with an electric sander) but it’s taking forever because of all of the little curves and everything on the chairs and the table legs.
Do I even need to sand it off? I was planning on sanding it down to the wood and then painting it all white and coating with polyurethane. Can I just do extra coats of white over the purple to cover it, or will it not stick because there’s already paint there? If I do need to sand, how thoroughly do I need to do it? Do I need to do the little crevices by hand if the sander can’t reach them?
Wipe them off and paint them! Unless the other lady painted them with oil based paint, in which case you’ll want to prime or do an oil based finish.
