Gfi Receptacle
The NEC states that single phase receptacles in a residential garage should be gfi protected….?
What about 3phase receptacles?
I don’t think that any place with a 3-phase receptacle would be considered to be “residential.” I think that you could consider your phase converter as utilization equipment rather than distribution equipment providing a 3-phase outlet. I think that the sort of ground fault protection that is available for 3-phase is designed to protect against fire and equipment damage rather than electric shock. It is not as sensitive or as fast acting as a GFI.
It is probably not a good idea to permanently install your phase converter and power a wall outlet with it. It is less likely to be scrutinized by an electrical inspector if it looks like utilization equipment. Does it have a UL, CSA or ETL label?
