If you are assembling a bicycle it is just as easy to get a three way wrench. It has the 3 most common sizes of allen wrenches in one tool. At your local bicycle shop.
If you want a complete set, I recommend you buy the best quality tools instead of “anywhere” tools are sold. Craftsman IS better (for us commoners — professionals use Snap-on & Mac). Sears.com or Sears stores. Bicycle specific tools — buy Park. Find them at parktool.com and buy them at your bicycle shop. There are Nashbar.com tool sets, but they are definitely second tier not top shelf. The reason you want the best tools is so you have ones with the narrowest tolerance. That is they fit the fastener better–and not slipping and stripping a bolt head (common place with allen bolts and misfitting tools) They also are made out of the highest grade material to last longer.
Yes, you need a metric set. While you are at it buy an 8mm allen socket that fits your ratchet for the crank bolt (if you have that style) as it is very hard to apply 50NM of force on a conventional L shaped allen wrench.
