Why did you have to hold down the reset button when turning off the NES?
On the old Nintendo Entertainment System, when you had a game that was capable of saving data you were constantly warned to always hold reset while powering down, or it might erase your game. I was just wondering, does anyone know how exactly that works? Why does holding reset have an effect?
the reset button had to be held down to provide a pathway for the power to remain on the part of the chip that was writing your save data.
Simply turning it off would be the same as if your computer crashed and you had not backuped or saved your data in a while,it would be lost
