What Are the Effects of Oil Drilling on the Environment?

Modern offshore oil rigs provide an important source of access to undersea oil reserves, and the increase in global demand for oil has led to development of new offshore platforms. While the immediate impact may not be as visible as land-based production, oil drilling in both capacities can have a variety of harmful effects on the local ecosystem. Even with improved lower impact drilling technologies, oil extraction poses a wide variety of environmental challenges to local environments. Recent research has suggested that the byproducts of oil production can harm local wildlife and plants, as well as creating byproducts that can impair the local water supply. The chemical composition of oil can be toxic, and even precise extraction can result in runoff and damage to local ecosystems, contaminating soil, water supplies and a variety of local resources.

Recent studies into new oil development have shown that oil production has impaired local ecosystems in areas such as Nigeria and Ecuador, raising red flags for local environmental concerns. While the domestic Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) places strict guidelines on new oil exploration within the United States, many national governments, such as Ecuador and Venezuela, have much more lax restrictions on oil production.
Where oil companies are nationalized, there is often a lack of environmental oversight, which results in oil spills and improper disposal of waste. In one particular case, oil exploration in Ecuador resulted in improper disposal of oil byproducts, harming local rivers, and resulting in damaged soil, water supplies and wild life.

The need for transparency and accountability for environmental production has created an even more stringent requirement for oil producing nations to be held accountable for the byproducts and externalities that result from oil exploration. International agreements on environmental standards have begun to address these issues, and the United Nations has begun to create standards to ensure equitable treatment of environmental concerns throughout the supply chain.
