What is the difference between a hammer drill and an impact driver?

A hammer drill is any drill that incorporates an “in & out” movement along with the rotation. Essentially “hammering” the drill bit up and down very slightly while spinning it. This is necessary when drilling through concrete and stone based materials. The function causes the material to break apart inside the drilled hole and be fed up the bit’s spiral shank and out of the hole. All hammer drills are labeled as such and called “hammer drill”, “roto-hammer”, “rotory hammer” Most standard cordless drills of 14volt or more are available with the “hammer” function. The larger, more industrial size units that are specifically designed for concrete drilling and chipping also incorporate a “chisel” feature that acts like a small jackhammer without spinning and use “chisel” bits as well as being able to drill and “hammer drill” These typically wont accept standard shank bits and you must purchase or rent a shank type called “SDS”.
An impact driver is a drill or driver that uses a centrifugal clutch that operates like a regular powered driver but is sensitive to resistance and will stop spinning the screw, bolt, nut,… when it feels it is tight. The impact driver will still be “on” as long as you hold the trigger but the actual socket or bit in the end will only turn the item a little at a time and the unit will make a “Clicking sound” while operating. Typically used for items like lug nut, drywall screws, etc. and thing you dont want to over tighten.
