Lace is a lightweight fabric patterned with open holes. These holes can be formed by removing threads or cloth from a previously woven fabric, or created as part of the lace fabric. Lace-making is an ancient craft that dates back to the late 15th and early 16th centuries. A true lace is created when a thread is looped, twisted, or braided to other threads independently from a backing fabric. Lace holds a unique appeal because it evokes a more traditional and vintage style. Although it is commonly seen in curtains and clothes, it can also be used in various pieces of jewelry.

If you want to make lace jewelry, a necklace, for instance, the first step would be to find an old necklace chain. Lay it down on its full length and measure down three inches, breaking the chain at that spot with the use of pliers. The next step would be to pry open a necklace ring with your fingers and then try to push it through the necklace chain. As for the lace, slip it onto the necklace ring before carefully closing it. Do the same thing for the other piece of the broken necklace, measuring down seven inches.

Now, if you want to make a lace bracelet, what you need is again vintage lace. Measure the lace around your wrist to see how much of it you will need in order to make your lace bracelet. Remember to leave an extra couple of centimetres at either end to turn under. Cut the section of the lace that you want to use, making sure to snip away any odd threads. Sew a hook to one end of the lace, and an eye to the other end, which will serve as your lock.
