Kit Fits Dremel

Get a PC that does not look like it came from a PC hyper-Mart shelf

If someone "mods" or "modeling" says to you, You probably think one of two things: a neon-lit, Willy-waving offense to everything that is good and virtuous, or an amateur craftsmen possess an ability to a Dremel and a soldering iron as you could not even dream.

Both things be true to some extent, are. A large part of moddingdom does, it must be said about traditional notions of taste and decency in favor of what looked like the sort of garish monstrosity you would find parked on Saturday night in Dublin. What one must remember that just because such a case mods to get off that tend to show they are not the alpha and omega of the form. There is a silent army of stylish mods because outside the living room decor tailored to fit or sit next to a sleek AV system. Case Modding no hard and fast rules – it's about tailoring your PC the way you want it to seek it. If this is done so to join it appear as if you just ram-raid car had style, so be it.

To address the other stereotype, it is also true that a truly epic case mod requires a formidable amount of time, patience and experience. However, a complete revision is not necessarily what you have to be. A variety of case mods include only the change of one or two specific things: for example, improving air circulation, adding a side window or etching a pattern on the side. A softly-softly approach has very little to fear for a beginner.

The exact origins of the case modding history are lost – Duran Duran stickers people could apply to their spectrum or spraying argue their Armigas counts for him – but there are certain hot spots, moments that have led to its creation. Modding is about two things: aesthetics and performance. In the former case, it evolved from the late 1990s, strong growth in Overclocking the PC out of the growing influence as a gaming platform.

People are looking for more performance from their processors and graphics cards meant the components generate more heat, and in return there was a need for additional cooling. Case Mods bent for this purpose to the functional, not pretty – Brackets for the fans, extra vents, fan controller … De rigueur these days, but also a matching extra for a single fan was crazy talk for a mass-produced PC case in 1997 or so. You may not have been right (they were often noisy to boot), but it led to the realization that a computer case is not an immutable object. It was like a blank canvas on which every design could be painted.

Mod Emergence

In addition there was the vague tandem increasing mockery of the traditional, drab beige box case was subjected to, which culminated in the publication of lurid, but eye-catching iMac from Apple. Everything, translucent, candy-colored plastic slightly ridiculous by today's understatement, mono-hued standards, but in 1998 it was like the first kid in school, came to their ears. Everyone wanted to copy it – and case modders was faster than production lines. There was this sudden realization that the computer could at home, a visual Centerpiece of a room to be pushed, not a dirty secret under a table. Key to this was that the iMac's innards were partly based on the fair, which reinforces the concept celebration of the PC circuit – especially in the case of hardware. In other words, window.

In many ways, a transparent side wall is the de facto case mod, to the point that a large number of retail stores will be cases already. Regardless, it remains one of the most satisfying and straightforward case mods for a first-timer. Pre-Cut glass or acrylic windows are available from online case modding shops, so it's mostly a question of dimensioning and then cutting a dirty great Hole in your case side panel. Not quite as easy as it sounds, I admit, but it's great for the "I have this" feeling, and it is a form of modding, that does not immediately make your PC look like it is from glassgow. Moreover are thousands of visual changes of color and form. It is no coincidence that the rise of modding hand-in-hand could aspiring modders their creations with like-minded people to share, offer and seek inspiration and advice on sites like HardOCP and virtual-hideout – went with the advent of the Internet private.

What began as individual experiments evolved into a huge community, which in turn born of the standardization of parts and techniques – and much good-natured Competition. In due course, online stores sprang up to service this community, and as a result of the bread and butter modding components – hoses, lighting, fans, front Connectors and indicators, and even to colored Molex connectors and thumbscrews – Are now easily and cheaply available. Compare that with ten years installation of a fan or a light soldering and rewiring involved, to connect it to your PC power supply. Well, those pieces of jewelry come with plug-and-play Molexs installed, making installation a breeze.

Similarly, for fans now-standard shapes and sizes to fit neatly with the attachment points in the most PC cases, while most lights now come with Velcro or sticky back plastic for immediate use. Between this and the sheer omnipresence of the carved shells and cut PC, we are now at the point where imagination is the most important inhibiting factor to a major case mod.

This leads us neatly to a third factor for the scene – fanboyism. If you want out from the crowd, there's plenty of neon lighting strips do not get noticed more, but a one-of-a-kind real tribute to your favorite game or movie. The Internet makes a colossal Star Wars or Half-Life Geek perfectly acceptable, so we built PCs within R2D25 and models of Futuromo've seen for the Bender and designed to look like Citadel 17th Obviously, this kind of stuff has gone one step further, where a degree of craftsmanship as well as familiarity with the tools, plus is not always ideal for the practical aspects of running and upgrading a gaming PC. Something like a motto or a painting carefully etched logo is an achievable compromise.

Mod to trot

Let us a little on the nuts n bolts Basics of modding look rewind. Take, for example, your heating system regularly, you are a fan of the mount points and sounds like the water cooling Work of the devil – what do you do? Of course, you have to either blow cold air into the case further or suck warm air out of it. So you need either one additional fan. In its simplest form, this match involves measuring the diameter of the fan blades and a hole to fit (just do not cut the hole to the square frame of the fan of the suit, or you will not be any area, have left to fix the thing) There are different ways to make the cut -. a jig saw, a rotary saw or a keyhole saw. The latter is the most preferred in this case – it is a man for all accidents that of a perfect Circle cuts, so there is minimal risk of ending up with a hole like an egg painted by Picasso when he would look at a lot of triple-espressos. Provided you want to install a standard 80mm fan, you need a hole saw blade is about 76mm-clear, larger fans require larger hole saws.

Tooling On

You also need a bench, a few clamps and a clunky piece of wood you for no other Purpose that you need to pop the casing as you cut into it. This is messy, tricky business, and you do not want to end up with a coffee table in circular scars covered, or a severed finger. The back wall also prevents bending and distorting the case, as you add the wrath of the mod on it. None of this kit is expensive, but worth a decent, semi-permanent fixture in your garage or workshop, if case modding something that you intend to embark on a regular basis. Press down firmly on the hole saw and little by little – it does not need to spin very fast, and you should pause for a few seconds when it begins to feel crazy-hot.

Once you are finished, the first thing you'll notice that the wound was not a clean one. The new hole will inevitably raggedy Edges and along with your finger, your skin will weep salty tears of red, so you do not. This is where perhaps the archetypal case modding tool comes in – the holy Dremel (Or equivalent rotary tool – Dremel is simply the best known brand). A Dremel is a small, low power drill, if instead of carving huge holes, it is more for designed polishing and grinding and etching through small, precise fittings. To smooth out your circle, you want the sanding drum bit – you move it gradually to the edge the unpainted (ie inner) side of the case. This will get rid of those deadly sticky bit, but you will manually need some sand or steel wool to make the cut, perfectly smooth.

Now you have made your hole, you have two choices when it comes to actually mounting the fan, and she neatly grasp the essential dichotomy at Case Modding – aesthetics or functionality. In the latter case, you can easily measure and pencil mark the four corners of the fan holes on the bottom of the case, then drill 'em, drop by a few screws (they should have been supplied with the fan) and Bob's your uncle.

For the former, a complex approach is needed. Well, mostly glue. A two-part epoxy-metal bond is what you need and you should get maximum purdiness a ventilation grille to – you can find all this kit at any decent online case modding shop. Place the grill on the top of the fan, the screws fall by each of the corners, and apply the epoxy on the screws' flat heads. Align the fan-grid arrays with the hole in your case, and hold the Screw heads on the bottom. Then bring some nuts and washers under the fan, to keep it in position, and you have a stealth blowhole, no ugly Screw heads visible on the outside of the housing. Hardly the be all and end all modding, but that pretty quick n easy tweak does include many of the core principles of art. The same tools to cut holes through cooling water pipes or fittings to create handles add to the case, or etch a design on the side, or create openings for front-mounted USB ports.

Alternatively, you can just buy a high-end event with a crap load of fan mounts. Standardized parts, one could say that among the fun at the Case-modding, but on the other hand, they add lightness of a modular design of a custom Case. You could do something as simple as replacing your PC with pre-assembled fan Jobbie LED-enhanced, and already have a system that does not see more just like it PCHyper came off of a Global Mega Mart shelf.

If you do not want to go down the route Boy Racer, perhaps the best option is painting. Whether it is simple re-coloring or an elaborate design of their own, it will transform to a metallic monolith into an element of pride, not shame. Car spray paint will do the Trick, but be aware you will need a primer and paint – And not to be confused paint and paint and primer. Choose one and stick to it. If your Case already has its own sport-painting, you will need to sand that sucker down first (which will probably involve removing the case into pieces as flat as far as possible). The removal of all the paint is not necessary, but you need to get rid of their texture. You need some pretty heavy sandpaper – 220 grit wet / dry, most likely.

Sand in one direction, and decrease if you start beating on metal. You must then move to a finer grit paper smooth the surface. Patience is important – a visible scratch stick out like a sore, gangrenous thumb are painting and priming is unlikely to make it to fill.

You also need to be clean out of the case before you begin to paint, as the fingerprint grease and metal color or foul things crumbs increased significantly. Get rid of a spray can of air, dust, and rub a quick rinse, followed by a dry cloth is kind of fat. Then it's time for a primer. The secret of this is multiple, very thin layers until the entire surface is covered evenly. Edges and surfaces where you got a little too enthusiastic with the sandpaper may require a little more attention. Once the primer has dried, you should also go with a very fine (grit 400) sandpaper to smooth it down, and then one can essentially repeat the process with the paint of choice.

You could stop there and have a pretty decent-looking case But how often is the case with modding in general, it still has levels, if you looking for perfection. In particular, a final sanding followed with an even finer paper, of a different color jacket, with a clear lacquer finish, rub through a combination showroom-it-up, followed by add. Each painting may require one or two days to dry, and the total number of hours involved loops may approach double digits – it's a long labor. To make something that looks decent or correct problems such as poor air circulation or overloaded wiring is simple, but creating something unique is very much another matter. You have to plan it meticulously planned change, and measure each part and not just plow on in and make yourself as you go.

Be willing to trash spilling blood and adult cases a large collection of tools. Of course, with everything that comes an enormous sense of pride – you are no longer merely a consumer. You are a craftsman.
