Why is loosing the tool bag in space such a big deal?

Obviously I don’t know much about space, the final frontier, but it seems to me that the infamous tool bag would either drift away into space, or would be burned up by the earths atmosphere but it must be a bigger problem than that for NASA and the media to keep reporting on it.
Harb; What? Do, we the people, get a refund on our taxes for that $100,000 LOST toolbag?
Owl Eye: Oooooh. That makes sense, although I would think there is SO MUCH space that the likelyhood of a tool or toolbag hitting something else would be extremely minimal. Huh. Something to think about.

The bag will also loose altitude much faster as the ISS and reenter already in a few weeks. The chance, that the Shuttle collides with it is pretty minimal, as the bag will be pretty far away from both station and shuttle when the Shuttle undocks – most important: in a different orbit plane. As it is bigger than 1 cm, it should already be tracked as piece of space debris and appear in automatically created space debris catalogs. The people on the ground who plot the course of the shuttle will know where the bag is and if the bag becomes a collision risk (can pass closer than 1500m to the Shuttle), will instruct the crew to do a tiny avoidance maneuver.

I don’t know how much the NASA grease-guns differ from normal grease guns, but they are two things:

- Likely custom made for being handled by astronauts in a spacesuit (=expensive)
- Newer than 1993 – the old EVA tool listing I have on my hard disk does not contain them yet, but the trash bag and the tool bag is already mentioned.
