Why are newer racecars designed to fall apart piece by piece in high speed crashes?
Wouldn’t it be safer to have the car’s metal body shield the driver in an accident?

Actually the act of falling apart dissapates the energy of the crash, instead of all that energy of the car hitting the wall at 200+mph being held within the car. In an Indy type race car the driver is protected within a “tub” and the rest of the car is made to crush or come off. In a NASCAR type racer the driver is protected within a roll/crash cage.
