what is the diameter of the pipe leaking in the gulf?
If we could put a larger pipe around the pipe that is leaking far enough on to it and have a way to tighten it down , would that work to flow through the new pipe line to a ship or, to shore? Depending on the size of the pipe and bringing it in line with the other pipe pushing it far enough on and clamping it down could stop the oil leak. Does any one think this type of operation would work?
The pipe is between 4″ and 6″ in diameter (based on my knowledge from working ground-based oil wells in the past).
What you describe is essentialy what they did this past weekend, and it seemed to help.
The difference between what you describe and what they did is:
The diameter of the larger pipe/cover was several times 4″ to 6″, instead of something like 7″ or 8″.
