How do I apply for a Student Exchange for a year?

Well I want to go into a Student Exchange for my grade 12 year, but I don’t know where to begin.

I’m a Rotary exchanger! I’m in Germany and my good friend is in Japan.

Usually, a club starts looking for interested students by putting up notices at the local schools or in the local paper in around September. if you don’t see any notices, you can go online, figure out what Rotary district you are in, get in contact with them, and they will tell you what club(s) operate int he area where you live. Small towns usualy only have one, but larger towns might have a few, and cities will likely have several. You email the club, say you are interested, and they will probably email you an application and set up a date to meet with you for a club interview. If you live in a small town, you might end up being the only interested student, or one of two, which makes it a lot easier to get intot he program than if there are seven students completing for the same spot. Some clubs will also sponsor more than one student, but two tends to be usual in small towns. If your Rotary club likes you at the interview and thinks you would be suitable for exchange, you go on to district interviews. If your club sends two kids to district interviews but only can send one on exchange, then you are still “competing” for the spot. But if you are the only person your club sends to districts, you are pretty much going on exchange unless you mess it up (like announce that you do drugs every weekend and refuse to learn a foreign language or something). And then you wait for information, and finally summer rolls around and off you go!

Rotary is the cheapest program (most are twice as much) but it DOES NOT guarantee our first choice country. You give a list of countries you are interested in (usually 5 or 6, in order of preference), and they pick fromt here. Usually you get within your top three; I got my first. So if you picked Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan, you’d have a pretty good chance of ending up in Asia, if that’s what’s important. Some countries might only be willing to take a single student, or can only accept a student of a certain gender (for example, they can only take a girl because for some reason the student will have to attend an all-girls school). if several kids wanted Japan but Japan would only accept one student for the district, Rotary has to pick. They’ll look at your other choices and their availibility (eg, better for two kids to get their second choice country than for one to get his first choice and another to get her fifth choice), and also your personality: a quiet, thoughtful, shy kid might not enjoy Brazil as much as the super-outgoing, loud, talkative one. (So it’s important to be yourself at interviews!)
