Prep Sanding
How do I prep a wall for wallpaper?
I have an old house that had 3 layers of wallpaper in the bathroom. I removed all three layers, but because the sheet rock wasn’t primed properly 50 years ago the last layer was difficult and booger-ed up the sheet rock.
I’ve hired somebody to hang the paper (12 rolls @ $20 per roll) but she wants $600 for prep only! I’d rather prep it myself. She explained almost 7 steps of prepping, sanding, priming, etc etc but I’m sure there is an easier way and she has 600 reasons to make it sound difficult.
Repair and Skim Coat.
Buy a bucket of joint compound and one 3″ and a 10″ inch spackle knife each. Rough sand, with 80 or 100 grit, all of the surfaces first with a pole sander (you’ll thank me later for that suggestion). Fill in any large holes with the 3″ knife first. Wait a day until dry. Scrape and sand down any excess. Take the 10″ knife, load it up with the 3″er and lightly coat over the entire wall(s). Let it completely dry as well.
Go back and scrape/sand any ridges and etc. Take the same knives and apply a finish coat to wherever you see is necessary (hint, take a lamp with a bare bulb help you see imperfections). When finished, take the pole sander and sand all walls down with at least a 120 paper until smooth. Use a finer grit if you have any excessive feathering to do.
You are now ready for any type of application (paint, wall paper, texture and etc.). Prime the walls though, with a good primer sealer (Bin Zissner and/or etc.), prior to doing so.
