How do I separate the axle from the tranny? HELP?

I have pryed and pryed like no other on this axle, and it will not separate from the tranny. It’s my drivers side axle and I dont have a lift so my cars on jack stands. Therefore I dont have much room to get leverage but Im down there with a pry bar and no matter what it wont come loose.

My Honda axle just popped right out, but my Subaru axle was held in place by some kind of pin that I couldn’t see because I didn’t have money or good equipment at the time, only the Haynes manual telling me it was there.

If yours won’t come out with very little coaxing, you’d better go get the manual and find out why, unless you can just rotate it and look for a retaining pin. My Subaru’s had to be driven out, so don’t expect it to be sticking out very obviously. I’d wipe the axle close to the trans with a rag and look and feel for any slight bump or depression concealing the hole containing the pin.

Several manuals have warned me not to try to pull the axle out by grabbing the other end of the axle! Apparently you can separate or damage one of the bearings that way.

At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on “auto repair manuals” on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on “Troubleshooting” that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car’s symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so “in the dark.”

For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton’s repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com’s free online manuals.
