2003 Blazer cv boot ripped?

Did brakes on daughters blazer and noticed boot in front closest to the tire was ripped. Does this boot just keep dirt out or does it hold lubricant of some kind? I’m 58 years old and have been working on autos since I was 12, but all this cv joint and electronic stuff is greek to me..lol. What does replacing this involve, pulling axles, adding lubricant, axle puller? Never did one, but guess I’LL be doing one. Oh, it’s 4wd also. Thanks for any info in advance!!!

The boot does keep out dirt and water and keeps lubricant in. (nice to know those 46 years didn’t go to waste, huh? LOL, yeah, I’m 52, I know what you mean! )
It’s not such a big job as it seems, (according to the people I’ve talked to about it, just a few bolts, pops right out… maybe a little more complicated than that, but not a lot. If you’ve had to do front end work in all those years, you know what I mean.) I think you do need a puller of some sort for this.
They sell just the boot, but they say that if it’s ripped it’s already time to change the whole thing, and it’s not much more money.
I haven’t done it yet, mine was ripped when I bought the truck about five years ago. Generally they “clunk” on turns when they go bad.
Pick up a Haynes or Chilton’s, the proceedure is in there. (Chilton’s explains and illustrates this proceedure better, I think)
