Pump Float

The float on my subpump is broken. Can you replace the float or will I have to buy a new pump?

It depends on what kind of float you have.

If it’s the kind that is just a float on the end of a cord, those generally can be replaced, although it may require some wiring unless it’s the type that has a special cord with a double plug (outlet molded behind a plug) that you plug the pump into.

If it’s the kind that slides up and down on a rod, that type controls a switch that is typically inside the pump motor, which sits at the top of a long shaft, well above the water. That switch may be replaceable, but like the simple float switch I mentioned above, it will require wiring as well, and also some disassembly of the pump motor.

If you do attempt wiring of any kind around sump pumps, be sure the electricity is OFF before exposing any wires or touching any electrical parts, cords, plugs, etc.
