The Popular Koi Types
Japanese fish breeders always strive to develop new koi types. These ornamental are perfect for ponds and water gardens. Many believe koi to bring good luck while they also symbolize strength, courage, and endurance. There are about 22 Koi types available in black, white, yellow, red, and cream. The categories are based on the koi’s markings, colors, and scale type. With so many koi being cross bred today, often a new combination is found.
Kohaku is among the white koi types with red in varying patterns. Each pattern has its own name. The markings should be even and not spread past the lateral line. The red hue must no be on the fins or tail.
Taisho Sanke is another type of white koi with red and black patches spread all over the body. This koi type has been named after the Taisho period in Japanese history. Doitsu sanke is the variety that has fewer variations. Aka Sanke are those koi where the red hue runs from head to tail. Kuchibeni is the variety that has red on their lips.
Among the popular koi types are the Showa Sanshoku, which are black koi with red and white markings. While black and red were the predominant colors earlier, there are plenty of varieties with a large amount of white, making it difficult to distinguish from a Taisho Sanke. However, a Showa has a black pattern on its head, a feature that is not found on a Sanke.
Utsuri Mono is another black koi type with white markings all over the body. There are also red and yellow versions of Utusuri. The pattern on the fish’s back resembles a checkerboard. The Ki Utsuri are black with a yellow pattern. Shiro Utsuri are black with a white pattern, while Hi Utusuri are black koi with a red pattern.
Asagi shusui is among the oldest koi types with light blue or red on top, often having yellow or cream below its lateral line and on its cheeks. The blue scales may be edged with white, which gives it a net-like appearance. The base of the pectoral fins, stomach, and gills are orange or red.
The Ogon or Hikari Muji Mono is a single color koi with a metallic shade. In this class, the body shape, color, and clarity of the head are the prominent features looked for in a competition. Bekko are black Koi types with red, white, and yellow patterns. Among the crossbred koi types is the Hikari Utsuri, a cross between Utsuri and Showa, or Ogons. Black dots may appear over the base color in this type of koi. Tancho is another koi type with a single red spot on the top of its head. Another beautiful type is the Ochiba, which is light blue or gray with bronze or yellow markings on its body.
These are only a few koi types seen around the world. However, breeders constantly experiment to come up with new breeds. What is most important is that koi are well looked after. They are not difficult to breed since they reproduce plenty of eggs at the same time. Moreover, they are study fish that can adapt to any living conditions. However, as a hobbyist it is your duty to make sure you give them the best in terms of food, a filtration system, and a good air supply in order to keep them healthy.
