Building an outdoor bird aviary!!!?
I want to build an aviary for my budgie/s (soon to be) and was wondering what is the best wood and wire etc. for the job. Also how should i connect pieces and wire mesh (pop rivet gun, staple gun…) How should i make a latch so the door closes automatically behind you and so you can lock it. It needs to be weather proof and strong enough so the birds and cats cant get in or out.
I have kept birds most of my life, and wonder about your seasonal environment and their abilities to withstand all elements?
To begin, the structure should at least be pressure treated lumber. I’d probably go with Aluminum tubing, Galvanized pipe or thick wall PVC.
I built a large one in WA state for a breeder and over decking I installed sheet vinyl for easy cleanup. In your case, I’d probably pour a slab. I have no idea where you are, but I’d even consider a pre-fab carport, and modify it. On that one I installed galv. mesh 1/4 inch openings, plus screen material, framed.
Since the job was a ROOM, I used horseshoe nails to secure the mesh to the studs. The mesh I purchased came in rolls, and if I was close to a roll end, I cut it at a stud and began a new roll. ALL sharp edges were kept Outside the structure.
You can design a frame for a typical residential screen door, with a Pnuem. closer, but I’d never assume the time frame to close without staying there to monitor, escapes or intrusions. You may want to consider two screen doors, one inner and an outer.
The structure has to be stable enough to withstand the weather conditions, plus strong enough to support any manner of roofing. Again, not knowing where you are, how large this will be, you might question any zoning/ code regulations. You could save a bit, by butting one side to another structure, IE: your house.
