How do sand particles (and other materials) become positively charged?
“Glue is sprayed onto a moving strip of paper. As the glue leaves the spray gun, the glue
breaks up into tiny negatively charged droplets which coat the paper. The sticky paper
passes between two metal plates. Sand moving on a conveyor belt also passes between the positively charged metal plates. Here they gain a positive charge.”
How does the sand gain a positive charge?
Basically the positively charged plates attract the electrons in the silicon dioxide and pull them away, leaving a positive charge behind on the molecule. The electrons hit the plate and neutralise a an ion carrying a positive charge.
