How Do I Paint My Own Drum Set?

So a guy gave me an old drum set which is in great shape, but the colors are wearing off a lot. So I really want to give it a different color, so what do I do? Sand off the colors first? Then primer or something? And should I use a brush, roller or should i buy a spraying kit? Everything helps guys, thanks!

~may be wiser to add wraps if none, if wraps are peeling scuff and resurface, may be better not to worry too much if set is really old and/ used, better to make sure the mechanics of set and cymbals are working ok, and add where needed,
~if it is the wood being painted, spraying may be best for results, you could sand or use remover and check state of wood, if not too bad could use stain and/or re-varnish or polyurethane, and possibly restore to original state if antiques,
