Rotary encoder and motor?

So i know how a rotary encoder works, but before i go out and purchase one, i was wondering how it relates to the motor you’re using physically. like how does the spinning disk coordinate with the shaft of the motor?

The purpose of an encoder is to measure how much the shaft has turned in a given time frame. If you’re asking where to mount an encoder then it depends on the assembly that you want to mount it on. In most cases, you do not want to mount it directly onto the shaft of the motor because
a.) the shaft is too small and/or short
b.) the motor shaft is part of a gear train to drive a different shaft

When you mount an encoder on a shaft, the encoder disk has to be made for that diameter of the shaft. The disk has to be tight-fitting so that it can rotate along with the shaft, while the infrared emitter and detector are mounted to a part of the chassis that does NOT move with the shaft.

Now the signals that you receive from the encoder will be in the form of a square wave. If number of waves represents how many pulses that the encoder has sent out. If your encoder is rated for 360 pulses per revolution, then you’ll know that the shaft has turned 1 degree per pulse.

A microprocessor can count how many pulses the encoder has sent and therefore know many revolutions the shaft has performed as a result from driving your motor. You can then use that information to alter how fast your motor is driving using PWM.
