How can someone let drugs rule their life?
My 18 year old son has had drug counseling, been on probation, and community service. He was going to school ,making the grade accepted to a collage. When he got off of probation and turned 18 he started skipping school, drinking, and doing drugs. He is now in jail on a burglery charge, I refuse to bail him out. I don’t know how I will be able to trust him. He is also dating a pregnant girl, he swears the baby is not his. I saw his downward spiral, and took action. I was in contact with his school, to see what kind of assistance they could provide, I even called his probation officer, nobody could do anything. I talked to my son tried grounding him. This all happened in a matter of weeks. He admitted to me that he has a drug problem, the one person he might have listened to was his drug counseler, but he passed away. Has anyone out there been through this?
yes, I put my parents through it. Sober a year now, I can see my mistakes, and make amends by not living that lifestyle, I too made the grade, got into school, did extracurricular, but also got in trouble and just didn’t learn. Really, I just didn’t care. Treatment and good friends really did turn my life around. You are doing the right thing not to bail him out of jail, it would only further enable him to make the same choice. Alcoholics and addicts are sick, we do the same things over and over…expecting different results. Unfortunately, take away the drugs and alcohol and all that is left is an inability to handle life.
You should definately check out AlAnon, you can find support there from other parents who have been in your shoes. Many judges will let detainees out of jail, if they are going to treatment, or have lesser sentences if they are participating in a rehabilitation program. Suggest AA or NA to your son. Most areas have young peoples meetings where he can meet other kids like him.
The only real comfort I can give you is that there is hope. I am 20 years old, and have many sober young friends who have overcome things much like your son. He still can lead a productive life, but it is up to him. Like I said, he is sick and he must have a desire to get better and change, which sometimes just isn’t there. Hope you can find a solution.
