How do I build a 30 foot footbridge? Have any pictures?
A creek runs through the backyard of our new house that is about 30 feet wide, and we need to build a nice-looking slightly arched footbridge to cross it. I was thinking powder-coated steel would work best so it will last a long time. My questions are: How should we build the bridge? and do you have any pictures to give us ideas?
Bridges are a governmental nightmare. You need permits from The Army Corps of Engineers, your State Dept. of Environmental Protection, and any piddly requirements that your local government might have.
I’ll just assume that you have all of that taken care of…or, that you can’t see your bridge from the road.
First thing that you have to do is determine how high the creek gets during a flood. FEMA puts out maps for every river and it’s tributaries that gives floodplain elevations. Your local government should have a copy at the municipal building.
Once you get the flood elevation set, you need to build your abutments on both shores of the creek. Typically, these are made out of concrete, but you might be able to get away with using stacked gabion baskets if it’s just a footbridge.
Then you build your bridge on top of the abutments. Wood is ok for a footbridge. Steel is better. Reinforced concrete is best, but expensive.
You probably don’t need to powder coat your steel. I’ve never seen structural steel get powder coated since you need to bake the powder in an oven. Regular old latex barn paint would work just fine. In fact the surface rust on steel acts as a barrier to prevent more rust, as long as the rust doesn’t start delaminating (falling apart).
You might want to fabricate your framework on solid ground and get a backhoe or excavator to lower it onto the abutments.
