Anyone having a home birth?
Is anyone else having a home birth? If yes, why did you decide to do a home birth?
This is my second to do at home. I absolutely love it and would never consider going to the hospital again. We chose to have a home birth with #3 because I absolutely hated being in the hospital strapped to a bed. I did not like they way they just took over my baby after delivery. I had 100% natural deliveries with no complications, and 5 hours of labor with each.
I had my first home birth (5th child) 8.5 months ago. I actually looked into it when I was pregnant with #4, but there were no midwives available in my area. I ended up having a really nice all natural hospital birth, but I still felt like something was missing. My first birth almost 10 years ago was an absolute nightmare. I was given pitocin, even though I arrived in active labor. I was confined to bed, not allowed to eat or drink. The contractions very quickly became too painful, and I opted for an epidural. At one point, my mother heard the doctor out in the hall say something to the effect of “Slow her down, there’s another one about to go”. Meaning that another woman was about to give birth, and they wanted me to hold off. So, they gave me meds for that, and pretty soon, my baby went into distress, They wanted to do a c-section, but I refused. I spent the next 2 hours on my hands and knees, the only position that kept my son’s heart rate normal. Eventually, I was wheeled to the operating room, given a large episiotomy, and had my son yanked from my body with forceps. He had some trouble at first, but was fine within a few minutes, despite all the interventions. I was then stitched up without any anesthetic. I experienced pain from the episiotomy for months afterward.
Fast forward to my unassisted (I started looking into UC almost immediately after my daughter’s birth, and was very comfortable with the idea) home birth last May. I went into labor around 8:30 a.m. I ate, laid on the floor, the bed, sat on the toilet, walked up and down the hall, labored in the shower. Basically, I just did as I pleased. I didn’t have anyone telling me what to do, because my body was my guide, and I was in charge. I was able to get in the birth pool we had set up in our bedroom, where I labored for awhile before getting on the bed. When I felt like it, I got back in the pool, where I pushed on my hands and knees. I turned over when I felt my baby crowning, and pushed him out into my own hands (at 1:23 p.m.). I wept as I brought him up out of the water and onto my chest. I am in awe of the whole experience, even 8 months later. I cherish the fact that his birth was so gentle, and that mine was the first touch he ever felt. He didn’t know anything in his first moments other than love. No harsh lights, loud voices, or poking and prodding. Just quietness and love. It was the single most beautiful experience of my life. Medical necessity aside, I will never do it any other way.
