Which is a better, all-purpose sub-compact camera? SONY DSC-W300 or CANON Powershot SD990?

Only want to compare these two. Which is the better choice for better pictures AND versatility?

The Canon is 14.7 megapixels to the Sony’s 13.6 megapixels.

The Canon has 3.7x optical zoom to the Sony’s 3x.

The Canon has IS (Image Stabilization), the Sony has Steady Shot.

The Canon is 343.99 whereas the Sony is 309.99.

The Canon has a 2.5″ LCD, the Sony has 2.7″.

They are as close to the same as two models can be. Personally, I would go with the Canon just on the basis of image quality. I would think it might be marginally better than the Sony. Both these cameras are pretty new, so I didn’t find any great reviews.

Also, I know you only wanted these two models, but one of the discussions I was able to find on these cameras indicated that the most versatile camera in this range might be the Canon SD880IS (which has around 10 megapixels) but has a WIDE ANGLE option which I find to be very useful. My wife has the SD850IS–fewer megapixels, same small form factor, though–and we have been very happy with the size, battery life and image quality. The SD880IS can be had for 259.95 on Amazon, but does not come in basic black which might not be fitting for a cool monkey such as yourself. On the other hand, you could save $80+ which you could spend on a bigger SD card and extra battery or case.
