How to get a helicoil insert out?

Hi i recently had a spark plug blow out of my 99 crown vic 4.6 and i went to use napa’s thread repair kit. Its one where u put an insert in place after retapping the hole bigger. My question is i think the insert screwed in to deep and i want to get it out and try to put in another insert because the sparkplug wont grab and torque down. How do i get the insert out? i was thinking about buying an EZ out but i dont know where to get on that will work. thanks

The best way I know of to take out an existing helicoil insert would be to get something in (fine tipped screwdriver, sharp pointed awl, etc…) to pry up the outer end of the insert towards the middle of the hole, then grab the end with some pliers (needle nose vice-grip type would work good) and unwind it out of the hole either by twisting it or just pulling it straight out (twisting it back out like you twisted it in would probably reduce the chance of it breaking.)

My concern with retapping the hole with the head still on the engine is, where did all the metal filings go from the tapping? I would think they fell into the cylinder and would be near impossible to get it all out, and that is not the best place for metal pieces to be, scoring the cylinder walls, binding up the piston as they wedge between it and the cylinder walls, etc… maybe a good magnet with a flexible end to pull out all of the filings may work…??? unless it’s an aluminum head….
