Tile Glass Marble

Do we really need to support the installation of cement install marble tile on painted drywall?

We have drywall in our kitchen, the painted was with a smooth semi-gloss paint over 8 years old. We want to install 3 "x6" tumbled marble as a backsplash to drywall. It is about 1 / 4 "thick so probably a little heavier than, say, small square glass tiles that come on a 12" x12 "netting. One person in Home Depot said that we could only sand and scrape the drywall and then apply the thinset and install the marble. Another said we might want a Portland cement backing. We are not really DIY and so we would not create extra work with the cement backing, if it is not needed. That is, we do not want the Drywall to start peeling and the marble tiles started to fall after a short time. Please share. Thank you!

I would recommend Wonder board screws on the drywall before the tile on. This gives you a durable use. It will keep your costs a lot, and you will be much happier in the long run.
