Why won’t a trailer back up with the same steering motions as going forward ?
When you back up a car, you can retrace the same path by performing the exact same steering motions in reverse as you did in forward. When you back up a trailer, you would think the same rule would apply. But, imagine driving around in a circle pulling a trailer with your steering wheel locked to one side – the trailer will follow along just fine. But, try backing up pushing a trailer with the steering locked to one way, and the trailer will instantly jack-knife and break the hitch off. Why isn’t steering with a trailer reversible ? Steering without a trailer is. When you think of the angles involved over small movements, it seems that the angles would be the same forward and backwards. I am an engineer and have asked several other engineers and nobody can adequately explain this. If you think you have a quick answer to this, think a little deeper and the answer will evade you !
The difference is stability. Going forward with the steering wheel locked, the angle between tractor and trailer is self correcting; any slight change in the angle between tractor and trailer will automatically decrease. Going backward with the steering wheel locked, any slight deviation from the stable angle angle between tractor and trailer will automatically increase. Skill is needed to quickly correct for any change in the angle between tractor and trailer before it increases.
