Can I lower my miter saw rpm’s successfully with a VARIAC?

I have a 14-amp Ryobi miter saw and a 25-amp VARIAC. My problem is that I wish to use a metal cutting blade that is rated for 5500 rpm and that is just about was the saw puts out no-load. I want to be safe, of course, and the blade gets better performance around 3000 rpms from what the manufacturer says. Question is, can I just use my VARIAC to lower the speed of the saw (without hurting it, of course) and, if so, would the rpm be proportional to the voltage i.e. 60 volts=approximately 2700 rpm give or take…

probably not very well. most likely it’s a brushless motor (also called an induction motor) in which the speed is governed by the 60 cycle current. Look at the tag on the motor and see it the RPM is close to one of these.

Those are the common ones. If it is, then the variac will slow it down, but it’ll work poorly, and possibly overheat the motor. variacs work better with brush motors because they don’t depend on the 60 cycle current to drive them.
