Does a window ac work as well as central air?

Does a window air conditioner work as well as central air? I have problems with humidity (asthma) and i am thinking of moving into an apartment that does not use the central air conditioner all the time so I wanted to run a window one. I know you need to get the right size for the space etc. also is it going to be really loud?!

Here is what you do !
#1. Measure the width,length and ceiling height of the room your air conditioner is going in. Also include adjoining rooms that do not have a door on them.
#2. Note the type of window you have where you want to install the window unit. Does it raise up and down? This is a double hung window. Open lower sash up as high as it will raise and then measure the width and height of this opening – write this down. Do the same on any other kind of window. A dougle hung window is the best window for installing a window air conditioner. If the window is fixed or stationary you will need to remove the window sash (not the frame just the glass sash) and then have someone enclose the area around the new window unit.
#3. Note how far away the nearest electrical outlet is and if it is 110 volt. You may need to have a 220 volt outlet installed if the room size is large and requires a higher capacity window unit. You should check with your landord if this is needed to make sure you don’t violate any rental agreement. You will have to pay for this electrical modifications for this window unit.
#4. They do make units that are mobile and just have a hose you run to the window with a kit that makes this seal up around the window. These units are more expensive but you can move them from room to room.
Price all different types and remember you may need to pay someone to install the window unit so they are sealed up tight and wired according to their voltage requirements.
