Is Albert Pujols up there with Babe Ruth, Ty Cob, Ted Williams and Willie Mays?

will Pujols possibly be number 1 for the best of all time? He a 5 tool player that could do everything.

No. Two reasons why we can’t call him #1 of all time (at least not yet): he doesn’t tower above his competition as much as Ruth did, and he hasn’t played a full career.

First of all, while Pujols is the consensus best hitter of this generation, it is hard to tell how he would have done in a past era. The best we can do is see how much better he is than other hitters of his own era, and compare that to others. Pujols’s career OPS+ (a measure of how his hitting compares to other major leaguers) is a very impressive 172. Babe Ruth’s however, was an all-time high 207. Ruth dominated his competition more than Pujols does (Pujols does beat Mays, however; Mays’s OPS+ was 156).

Secondly, Pujols hasn’t played his full career yet. It is unlikely, but possible, that Pujols could begin to drop off severely in his 30s, a la Don Mattingly. Ruth, Mays, and Cobb all played long careers and continued to dominate into their later years. We’ll have to wait and see if Pujols can match that. Also, it is impossible to compare Pujols’s career to Williams’s, because Williams missed several years in his prime because he was serving in World War II.

So while I think it is fair to mention Pujols among the all-time greats, it is not realistic to call him the best ever. The stats don’t quite support that, and the time frame is just not right.
